There is a stone in place, but I am not certain if the remains are still there or not. I had initially believed that this was his only memorial in the U.S. The stone was applied for in 1929. The application does not specify a birth date to be placed on the stone.

He was called Herman in everyday life.

He is said to have died at age 24.

At the request of his father, his remains were brought home home from France after having been laid to rest there, and interred in Galena, in 1921. He was placed in his step-mother's family lot, and his father's stone is next to the remnants of his stone.

He was certainly born in October, in Chicago, Illinois, but while he was a quoted 24 according to a newspaper report, and born on October 28, 1893, which which would actually make him 25 at the time of his death, other sources give his birth date as October 26, 1893 (family records), and October 29, 1894 (draft card). I have more accurately calculated his birth date on this new memorial due to newly discovered information. A Chicago registered birth certificate does not appear to exist for him.

This is a recreated memorial that I had previously created several years ago, and which I had likely deleted during a difficult time in my personal life, because of a lot of conflicting information that needed to be rewritten, added and edited in great detail, and general confusion on my part, because of the stone in the other cemetery. On the old site, there have been odd glitches that have made it difficult to edit biography sections, and occasionally, an entry of mine has been deleted with, or with out, my knowledge. I am recreating it at the urging of a fellow contributor. I believe that this is appropriate, since I can safely confirm that there are 2 stones in place.

He has a larger monument at Eastland Cemetery, rural Kinmundy Township, Marion County, Illinois. This stone is near that of his mother and her immediate family. He remains may have been removed from Galena, and placed there, as his maiden aunt remained alive until 1965. He died in a French hospital at Commercy, France, around 3 days after being wounded at Marcheville, France. That memorial is at # 105330497.

Plot information was obtained by me in September, 2011, upon inquiring about the cemetery plot by phone while visiting Galena, which I have done at least once every 10 years since my birth. Being a distant relative, and deeply sympathizing with his life's many hardships, I was extremely interested. I viewed the grave, and noted it's decayed and generally eroded condition. It had sunk into the ground considerably, so as to make it nearly illegible. It had been a tall, narrow, white stone, which was of standard military issue in 1929.

I now believe that this new entry, in greater detail, with newly discovered additional information, will better honor his memory than my previous one.

Inscription

George Anna.

(Barely legible or illegible otherwise as of 2012, due to general deterioration and erosion of the gravestone and the surrounding gravesite. The middle initial of H is supposed to be on the stone, along with Infantry, World War I. This information was found on the gravestone application.)

Gravesite Details

Stone was in poor condition as of 2012. Current condition is unknown. His father's gravestone was moss covered, so I assume that that part of the cemetery is prone to collecting moisture in general.
