The son of Mary Killinger and Joseph Stahl, Jacob enlisted in Co. A, 47th Iowa Infantry at age 16 in 1864 after his father died of disease in service and his older brother had been wounded but was still in service. He was mustered out the same day due to "want of physical development", but probably in realty the commanding officer knew the family circumstances and didn't want to deprive his mother and younger siblings of the only nearly adult male in that farming household.

He returned home that day and in around 1877 married Emma Nancy Civey, later farming in Pleasant Valley, Fayette Co., Iowa. They had four children, Oscar Eugene Stahl, 1879 - 1959, Joseph Augustus Stahl, 1880 - 1944, Mary Ann Stahl, 1883 - and Nellie R. Stahl Hessler, 1885 - 1911. Emma died before 1895, probably in 1894 at age 36. Emma is probably also buried in this family plot but sadly no death and burial record for her can be found.
