Rites Saturday for Herbert Guy

Herbert "Herbie" Guy, 58, the principal string bass player of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, died yesterday at his Indianapolis home.

He had played the bass viol in the symphony 25 years, serving as principal string bass player the last 10 years. He also taught classical guitar at Butler University and was chief music therapist at Centeral State Hospital from 1954 to 1966.

Before working at Central State, he was personnel manager of the North Carolina Symphony.

Guy was a classical guitar soloist. Guy earned a bachelor's degree in music composition and orchestral instrument at Butler University in 1950.

He had headed dance bands for various social events in the city and had been leader of the Indianapolis Symphone Orchestra String Quintet.

He was a member of the Unitarian Church and was on the board of directors of Local 3, Indianapolis Muscians Union.

A flight engineer during World War II, Guy was a member of the Army Air Corps. He received the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. in Flanner & Buchanan Broad ripple Mortuary, where friends may call tomorrow from 3 to 8 p.m.

Survivors - wife Patricia; sons Joseph, Charles, Herbert; mother, Mrs. Laura Guy; brothers, Albert, Charles, Edward; sisters Betty Jane Addleman, nellie Beiry.
