From "The Central New Jersey Home News," 12 July 1922:

"Mrs. Susan Skillman Eighty Years 'Young;' Husband Nearly Same Age

"Today Mrs. Susan Skillman, wife of John C. Skillman of 114 New street, is eighty years 'young' and n July 20 her husband observe his eightieth birthday.

"No special observance was made of today's anniversary except for greetings and gifts from members of her family.

"Nature has dealt very kindly with Mrs. Skillman and she looks more like a woman of fifty-five than the age she was attained. Her abundant soft hair is gracefully waved and worn in a simple parted fashion which adds to the sweetness of her face, which is a smooth and unlined as a young girl's.

"Mrs. Skillman has a very young heart and is never happier than when surrounded with young people. She has much in common with the young folks and enters into their pleasures with as much interest as the youngest of them. And young people love to be with her.

"Mrs. Skillman is very optimistic and though her life has been marked with much sorrow in losing many of her loved ones, yet her spirit has been strong enough to rise above these trials and she sees a silver lining in every cloud. She is one of the oldest members of the First Methodist Church and is interested in various organizations of the church. She has served as president of both the Ladies' Aid Society and Women's Missionary Society, as well as holding other important offices.

"Mrs. Skillman is very refined in her tastes and her home and dress well demonstrate this. She likes the present-day styles very much with the exception of the extreme favored by some young people. She is heartily in favor of the short skirt which she believes is much more sanitary than the long sweeping clothes affected by the women of previous generations. But she lays emphasis on the skirt not being too short, as she believes this borders on the vulgar.

"She is very fond of moving pictures and the theatre, but enjoys them in moderation.

"Mrs. Skillman who has been married twice is the last of her family. She has two children, Mrs. William V. Kibbe of Adelaide avenue, Highland Park, and Charles Miller of Jersey City. The late Mrs. Emily Voorhees boyd was another daughter. Her children visit her often and never a week passes but her son runs up from Jersey City to see if his mother is alright."
