Hannah L. Leonard was born February 14, 1832 in Ireland (possibly Scotland) daughter of William and Jane Hepenstall Leonard. Hannah came to West Branch, Iowa with her mother when she was 15. She had converted eight years earlier in her native Ireland. She became the second wife of Eli Hoover on August 17, 1854 after the death of his first wife and after he left Ohio and moved to Iowa. She became step mother to his children and also bore him another five children...William L.Hoover (1855-1892), Joseph Hepenstall Hoover (1857-1932), unnamed son (1860-1860), Mary Jane Hoover Harvey (1862-1926) and Martha J. "Mattie" Hoover Permberton (1866-1947). Marriage records indicate that she married Thaddeus M . White (1820?-?) on December 30, 1895 in Hubbard, Hardin County, Iowa. The date of his death is unknown but records show that on August 22, 1900 she married again to Joshua R. Steere. However, she is not mentioned in his obituary when he died in 1904. In the 1905 Iowa Census she is listed as "widowed" and living with her daughter, Mary Jane Harvey, in LeGrand, Iowa. The 1910 US Census lists her with her daughter, Martha Pemberton also in Legrand. Her obituary in the October 3, 1913 issue of the Legrand Reporter reports he death on September 30, 1913 in the Pemberton home. She was survived by three children, three step-children, 26 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren, as well as a sister, Mrs. Mary Fitsimmons of Muscatine, Iowa and a foster sister (step daughter of Joshua Steere), Mrs. Mary Ball, of Pasadena , California. After services at the Friends Church in LeGrand her body was taken to Hubbard for interment. (While there is no FAG listing for her she was apparently buried there, possibly near her first husband, Eli Hoover.)
