SOUTH BEND - Jane Butters has finally gone on to join Bill, after 38 years apart. She went with her faculties and sense of humor intact, remarkably so after 102 years here. Born in Jackson, Michigan during World War I, she married a dashing newspaper reporter from Concord, and became the proud wife of one of the South Bend Tribune's most respected political reporters, William C. Butters.

She was the devoted mother of Thomas (Mary Anne) and Mary Jane (Fred) Hipshear, tirelessly encouraging them in whatever they put their hand to, no matter how ill advised. She also worked in retail in South Bend's Wyman's and The Frances Shop stores. Her home on Woodside St. was haven for a colorful cast of characters and young people for many years, and they never left hungry. “Grammers” already is missed by grandchildren, Meredith (Mark) Easley, Lt. Col. Bill (Col. Michelle) Butters, USMC, Molly (Aaron) Hale, Alec (Katelyn) Hipshear, and Nora (Brett) Mason; plus six great-grandchildren who always found room on her lap. Jane was preceded in death by her larger than life brother, Wilfred Bassett of Jackson.

There will be a celebration of her life at the convenience of the family. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend is assisting the family.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Real Services, P.O. Box 1835, South Bend, IN 46634; or Southfield Village Resident Assistance, 6450 Miami Circle, South Bend, IN 46614.
