Donald Brault, age 90, of Mt. Horeb, WI., died on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at Agrace HospiceCare with his family by his side.

Don was born on September 1, 1927 in Two Rivers, WI., the son of Clarence and Marcia (Vaughn) Brault. He attended Two Rivers schools and enlisted in the US Navy upon graduation from high school in 1945. His service record included the South Pacific Theater. After military service, he enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning his bachelor and master degrees in physical education and health education and completed three years of advanced study in school administration.

He married Shirley Bonk on June 18, 1949 and began a life-long teaching career; beginning at the newly created South Shore School District, Port Wing, WI. There, he was responsible for developing the district’s first K-12 physical education program. He subsequently was appointed as the first supervisor for physical education and health in the Milwaukee County Superintendent of School’s office, serving for ten years before moving in 1966 to take a similar administrative position in the Madison Metropolitan School District, retiring in 1987.

His tenure with MMSD was one characterized by innovation, evaluation, and expansion. Working with staff, new, more comprehensive K-12 physical education programs were installed with features allowing students to test out of the program. Don served as the district’s first administrator to coordinate the district’s legal requirements to gain compliance with the new federal mandates for sexual equality in all school programs, including athletics. Teaching by example was a mainstay to his philosophy for working with students and staff.

Don was active in state and nation organizations for health and physical education, receiving numerous awards of recognition for distinguished leadership at these levels. He was elected president of the state association for health and physical education in the 1960’s.

Upon retirement he returned to his love of working with youth, serving as program director and canoe trip leader at Camp Kooch-i-ching, a wilderness summer camp for boys on the Canadian border, retiring in 1999.

He loved the out-of-doors and spent much of his retirement years enjoying outdoor activities with his family – canoeing in the Canadian wilderness and scuba diving in remote locations in Mexico, Central and South America, and the South Pacific. He logged over 300 dives in the Caribbean, celebrating his 80th birthday with dive number 300 in Honduras. Sailing was also a passion and he taught the sport for ten years at camp on Rainy Lake, MN.

Treasured family members include sons: Michael and Kevin (Virginie); daughter: Diane (Terry), grandchildren: Crystal (Mike) Hoffman, Ben, Alec, Maxime, and Margaux; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by Shirley, his wife of sixty years and twin grandsons: Matthew and Paul, and granddaughter: Ashley.

A gathering with family and friends will be from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Friday, April 6, 2018 at the ELLESTAD CAMACHO FUNERAL HOME, 500 N. 8th St., Mt. Horeb, WI, where a vigil service will be at 7:00 pm with Father Chahm Gahng. A Mass of Cristian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Two Rivers, WI with Fr. Maurice Mmegbuadimma officiating. Inurnment and full military honors will follow at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Two Rivers, WI.

Dad, we will always remember you. For the way you always put everyone first, respected their opinions, and valued their judgments. We will miss you, Dad, for just being you; our father, our mentor, and our friend. Love you. Mike, Diane, and Kevin.

Our family is deeply indebted to Agrace HospiceCare and their wonderful staff who gave so much comfort to Dad and suggests that in lieu of flowers and plants, memorial gifts be considered to Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711.
