Clara Thoman

ALEXANDRIA, VA - Clara (Brice) Thoman, 90, of Manor Care, Alexandria, Va. and formerly of York, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007. She was the wife of the late Raymond H. Thoman, to whom she was married for over 63 years.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Geiple Funeral Home, Inc., 53 Main Street, Glen Rock, with the Rev. Peter A. Seiler, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thoman was born in Platte Clove, N.Y., on Christmas Day, 1916, a daughter of the late Walter J. and Elizabeth (Ostrander) Brice.
She grew up in Rye, N.Y. and graduated as valedictorian of her class at Rye High School in 1934. She received a full scholarship to Vassar College and graduated with highest honors in 1938 with a degree in Latin. She received her Master's Degree from Bryn Mawr College as a Latin Fellow in 1938. She taught at the Dalton School in New York City prior to moving to Juniata College in Huntington, in 1941, where she met and married her late husband. The couple moved to western Pennsylvania where she then taught at Grove City and Westminster Colleges, Sharpsville High School and Youngstown University. She finished her Teaching career at Slippery Rock State University from 1968 until 1983, serving for a time as chairman of the English Department.
After her retirement, she and her husband moved to Lake of the Woods near Fredericksburg, Va. and lived there from 1983 to 1998. In 1998 they moved to York, first residing at Country Meadows and then at Normandie Ridge. After her husband's death in August 2006, she moved to Manor Care, where she resided until the time of her death. In addition to raising a family and teaching, Mrs. Thoman was active in Girl Scouts, the PTA and church activities. She was a member of Methodist Churches in Sharon, Grove City and Slippery Rock, and of the Lake in the Woods Multi-denominational Church. She taught informal ancient Greek classes at Lake of the Woods and at Country Meadows.
She is survived by a daughter, Ruth "Becky" Lindberg of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Raymond B. Thoman of Alexandria, Va., and Timothy C. Thoman of Amissville, Va.; and seven grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, two children, Walter H. Thoman and Lucinda A. Fuerle, predeceased her.
