Married to Joseph W Hand in Alameda on 11 June 1868, they had one daughter May b. 1870 in San Francisco, Joseph W would remarry to Mary E Dickson or Dixon in 1874∼Adelaide "Addie" C. Hand was born in Connecticut in 1851, to Cecilia Gorham and Adam Graham.
The 1860 census finds her at age 9 in the mining camp of Jenny Lind, Calaveras County, CA, with her mother and other members of the Gorham family.
On June 11, 1868, she married Joseph W. Hand, in Alameda, CA. In July of 1869, a daughter (May) was born to them in San Francisco.
Addie died on February 7, 1871, at their residence at 339 Clementina St. The cause of death was initially determined to be "congestive chills." However, a post-mortem examination revealed she had undergone an abortion and suffered a punctured uterus, and died from the resulting infection. The physician Dr. Charles O'Donnell was initially charged in connection with her death, but the charge was dismissed for insufficient testimony.
Addie Hand was interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in the San Francisco Section, tier 2, lot 20 (later renumbered to tier 6, lot 15). Her remains were reinterred at Greenlawn during the mass relocation of remains from Odd Fellows in the 1930s.∼Crime victim. Died from an abortion perpetrated by Dr. C. C. O'Donnell.
