US Senator, US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served the State of Hawaii in the United States Senate from 1990 until 2013. He served Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1977 until 1990. Born into a economically-stressed family of Hawaiian and Chinese decent, he served with the United States Army Corps of Engineering, as a welder and diesel mechanic during World War II. He received a Bachelor's degree and later a Master's in Education from the University of Hawaii and went on to teach and serve as a vice principal and principal in Hawaii's public school system. He entered the political arena, when he was appointed as Director of the Hawaii Office of Opportunity. While in Congress, he served on the Appropriations Committee. During his tenure in the Senate, he served on the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee. He pushed for legislation to make available funding for medical care and educational benefits for veterans and guided revenue to go towards enlarging Hawaii's national parks.
