Eli was a 26-year-old Teamster when he first enlisted at Middleboro as a Private with Co. K, 3rd Massachusetts Infantry on April 16, 1861 and was mustered into that regiment on April 24, 1861. After three months service at Hampton, VA the Regiment was mustered out of military service on July 22, 1861. He enlisted again at Carver, MA on October 25, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Massachusetts Infantry on Jan. 14, 1862 as a Corporal with Company C. Eli was recorded as "Present" on regimental muster rolls from January 1862 to December 1862. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on Oct. 2, 1862.

He was one of six men from Co. C cited by Lt. Col. Joseph Hayes, regimental commander, for their courage during this battle. His identified remains were not recovered and he's buried as an Unknown.
His wife Louisa remarried to Charles W. Pratt, a 29-year-old Shoemaker at Rochester, MA on Aug. 9, 1864, however, that marriage ended in divorce. Louisa married for a third time to John Butterworth, a Depot Agent, in Middleboro on July 9, 1873.
