Cinematographer. Born to American parents, Joseph Patrick MacDonald was educated at the University of Southern California, studying mining engineering. In the mid-1920s he came to First National Studios as assistant cameraman, graduating to first camera operator in the early 30s and finally full fledged cinematographer in the early 40s after joining 20th Century Fox, where he stayed until 1959. An excellent craftsman in both black and white and color, he showed his versatility in nearly every genre from film noir to westerns, comedies and musicals. Films include "Charlie Chan in Rio"(1941); "My Darling Clementine"(1946); "Call Northside 777"; "Yellow Sky"(both 1948); "Panic in the Streets"(1950); "Viva Zapata"(1952); "Niagara", "How to Marry a Millionaire"(both 1953); "Woman's World"(1954); "The Racers"(1955); "The True Story of Jesse James"(1956); "Warlock"(1959); "Walk on the Wild Side"(1962); "The Carpetbaggers"1964); "Alvarez Kelly"(1966) and "Mackenna's Gold"(1968). He was nominated for Academy Awards for "The Young Lions" (1958), "Pepe"(1960) and "The Sand Pebbles"(1966). Most of his career credited as Joe MacDonald, he died shortly after completion of his last picture of cancer.
