When we read that the railroad property in the United States is worth twelve thousand millions of dollars, and then read the same day that Hiram Mills, now living in Mt. Morris, aged ninety-one years, helped to build the first railroad in the United States, we get some realization of the rapid development which this country has experienced.

YOUNG SPITE OF YEARS.

Hiram Mills, of Mt. Morris, Ninety-four Years Old But Active Still.

Hiram P. Mills, of Mt. Morris, celebrated the ninety-fourth anniversary of his birth yesterday. Last evening a reception was held at his home on Murray street, and he received the well wishes of a large number of friends. As an evidence of his youth Mr. and Mrs. Mills danced an old fashioned cotillion to the delight of those present. Mr. Mills was born in Saratoga country, near the Hudson river. He remembers the war of 1812, and distinctly recalls the encamping of 2,000 soldiers on a field on his father's farm.

Mr. Mills was for many years a contractor on the canals in this state. He was connected with the Albany & Schenectady, which was the first railroad in the United States. For many years he was resident engineer of the old Genesee Valley canal. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Mills is an active business man. He is president of tho Geneaee Valley Bank, and has extensive interests in other lines of business.

DEATH OF THE OLDEST BANK PRESIDENT

Passing Away of Hiram P. Mills at Ninty-six.

HEARTY TO THE LAST

Feasted and Danced Only Last Thursday to Celebrate his Birthday Anniversary - A Long Life of Varied Activities -
Livingston.

Hiram P. Mills, of Mt. Morris, died yesterday. Mr. Mills Thursday of last week celebrated his ninety-sixth birthday, and after eating a hearty dinner, indulged in dancing and found occasion to chaff his son Charles, who is 70 years of age, as being a "quitter."

He was the oldest bank president in the United States, having been the president of the Genesee River National Bank of Mt. Morris continuously since it was established in 1853. He was one of the engineers on the old Valley canal and went to Mt. Morris in 1830.

Deceased was born on the 2d day of January, 1806, in Saratoga county. Mr. Mills remained at home until he was nineteen years old, when he married Jane Janet Dunn, and soon after engaged in a large contract with Captain Powers on the Delaware division of the Pennsylvania canal. He was afterwards associated with the construction of the first railroad on the continent, the Albany and Schenectady, which, when opened, was worked by cable, while the carriages were mere box cars.
