Opera Singer. Georg Maikl came from a singing family and studied singing in Stuttgart with tenor Anton Hromada . He was discovered by Bernhard Pollini of the Hamburg State Opera, but because of his death, Maikl instead took a contract at the Mannheim Court Opera (Mannheimer Hofbühne), where he debuted in 1899 in the role of Tamino. Gustav Mahler brought Maikl 1904 to Vienna to the Court Opera, where he worked the rest of his life, playing a total of 99 roles in 3062 performances until 1942. He appeared in such important Viennese premieres as Madama Butterfly, Ariadne auf Naxos and Wozzeck. He sang annually at the Salzburg Mozart Festival from 1906-1910 and at the Salzburg Festival beginning in 1920. The Vienna State Opera gave him the title of Kammersänger, and he was given an Honor Grave (Ehrengrab) at the Wiener Zentralfriedhof (group 33A /5/17). He recorded for Pathé, Odeon and Colombia, and can be heard on a live recording of the Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Felix Weingartner and the Vienna Philharmonic. In 1959, Vienna name its street Maiklgasse after him.
