Margaret E. Duenkel

Manitowoc - Beloved wife, inspiring mother and compassionate grandmother, Margaret Duenkel of Manitowoc died Sunday, April 15, 2018 with her family by her side.

Margaret was born on December 3, 1933 in Manitowoc to the late Joseph and Clara (Jost) Wotruba. Margaret graduated with the class of 1952 from Lincoln High School. On May 9, 1953, she married her high school sweetheart Elmer Duenkel Jr. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage. After raising five children, she worked outside the home in dietary at Silver Lake College, Holy Family Convent, Park Lawn Nursing Home, and River's Bend. Margaret was known for her delicious meals, raised donuts, cinnamon rolls, her famous gingerbread cookies and beautifully decorated cakes. Margaret was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community, Newton. She served as President of the Vicarate East/West, was a lifetime member of the Christian Women Association, the Catholic Women's Club, and life-time member of the River Road Homemakers. Margaret was a born leader and rallied individuals to volunteer for a purpose. She had a genuine love for life and shared her dynamic charisma with all who knew her. Margaret's sense of humor and zest for life and unfailing love for her Lord, her family and her friends could be seen in every walk of her life. She found the good in everyone. Margaret enjoyed creating celebrations on a regular basis and hosted memorable holiday traditions for her family and friends. She treasured the time spent with her husband, her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer Duenkel Jr., Manitowoc; her children: Nancy (Jan) Orth, Manitowoc; Lauri (Ken) Schrank, Sturgeon Bay; Cindy (Norman) St. John, Manitowoc; Don (Jeanne) Duenkel, Manitowoc; and Amy Jo (Dave) Brunette, Athelstane. Eleven grandchildren: Daniel (Michelle) St. John, Jason (Jodi) Orth, Carrie Orth, Sara (Jeremy) Johnson, Justin Schrank, Eric (Lindy) Duenkel, Michael Duenkel, Austin Brunette, Dylan Brunette, Dakota Jo Brunette, and Maverick Brunette. Ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by one sister and brother-in-law: Mary Lou and Ronald Ratajczak, Manitowoc; two sisters-in-law; Eunice Wotruba and Mary Ann Wotruba, both of Manitowoc; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law; LeRoy and Elayne Duenkel, Manitowoc. Many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Elmer Sr. and Isabella Duenkel; an infant daughter, Mary Lou; one sister: Kathleen Wotruba, three brothers: Gerald (Elizabeth), Gordon, and Fred "Fritz" Wotruba; along with sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Camilla (Dan) Kadin, Harriet (Lester) Burnett, and Catherine (George) Dobinski.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community, Newton. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Bishop Robert Morneau and the Rev. David Beaudry. She will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday evening, April 20, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Pfeffer Funeral Home, 928 South 14th Street, Manitowoc. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. The visitation will continue on Saturday morning, April 21, 2018 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45.
