Abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Monte Cassino for 36 years, from 1909 until his death in 1945. Bishop of Cassino and Titular Bishop of Constance of Arabia from 1928 to 1945. Born Vito Diamare, the Most Rev. Msgr. Gregorio Diamare, O.S.B., entered the Order of St. Benedict at Monte Cassino in 1884, and was ordained a priest in 1891. He was named prior of the abbey in 1908 and became abbot the following year. In 1951, Abbot Gregorio was posthumously awarded Italy's Gold Medal, the highest award for valor, for his heroic conduct in saving the monks, local refugees, and the treasures of his monastery, which was destroyed during the World War II Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944. He died from malaria several months after the destruction of his abbey, while reconstruction was underway.
