Dr. William B. Askren, born in 1926 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania to parents William B. Askren Sr. and Florence Rutherford Askren. He passed away on Tuesday, April 17th, 2018. He is preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Lois. He is survived by: son, David (Jill) Askren of Los Angeles, CA; daughter, Denise (Ed) Helke of Denver, CO; son, Dr. Daniel (Vanessa) Askren of Montgomery, AL; sister, Nancy (Eddie) Hobbs of Springfield and grandchildren, Jennica and Andrea of Denver, CO and Ella of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by his wife, Patricia Slamb Askren and her children whom he considered his own, Sherry & Bud Myahara, Connie & Al Harmon, Pamela & Bill Combs and Michael & Melissa Slamb. Dr. Askren received a PhD in Psychology from Purdue University and practiced many years in industry, universities and the federal government. He served 20 years in The United States Navy and was in uniform for WWII, Korea and The Cuban Misile Crisis, retiring in 1971 as a LtCommander. He did volunteer work for: Greene County, Ohio Suicide Prevention Program, Montgomery County, Ohio Probation Department and Prosecutor’s Office, Beavercreek, Ohio Office Department Patrol Program and Beavercreek, Ohio City Personnel Board. Dr. Askren loved to write and he published more than 80 technical reports and journal articles. He also used his writing talents as an editor to review manuscripts for two professional psychology publications. Dr. Askren loved bicycling. He started riding 100 mile trips in early years and slowed to 10-20 mile rides in his later years. He and his wife, Lody did bicycle tours in many states of this country plus bike tours in Europe. He also loved music and he played many years in The Beavercreek Strummers band plus in small groups. His performances included harmonica, slide whistle, voice and rhythm sticks. Visitation will be at Tobias Funeral Home, Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd., Beavercreek, Ohio 45432 from 6pm until 8pm on Friday, April 27th, 2018. Funeral service will be held at 10am on Saturday, April 28th, 2018 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 456 Woodman Dr., Dayton, OH 45431 with burial to follow at Beaver Cemetery in Beavercreek next to his first wife Lois (Lody) and his daughter, Linda Askren.
