He was a man of sterling character, and one who was loved and admired by all who knew him. He married Miss Minnie Varnadow on Dec. 21, 1899. In 1914 he moved his family to Fitzgerald where he purchased a farm, and lived there the rest of his life.
John Newton and Minnie raised three children:
1- Ella Cleo
2- Zealie Otis
3- Essie Clyde
John Newton was a Masonic, and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He died from liver cancer.
