Jasper N. was the son of John Swearingen and Mariah Forehand Swearingen. He was married three times. Ella Hutto was his first wife. In this marriage they had two sons - John Newton and Rufus Green. His second wife was Sarah Ellen Bullard. In this marriage they had four children - R.L.; Hamilton; Charles Bruce; and Ada Belle. His third wife was Susan Emma Bush.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army in May of 1865 in Macon, Georgia. His death certificate gives his name as Jasper N., but he was always refered to as "Uncle Newt".

He loved his whiskey tody, and ordered his whiskey from Jacksonville, FL. He took a measured amount every morning like a tonic. He was very fond of hot pepper, cheese, plain cake, and fish. One of his favorite past times was sitting in his high backed wicker rocker after dinner smoking a cigar. Two of his sons came to visit him one day. After dinner the men went to the front porotch for their after dinner smoke. Jasper N. was sitting in his rocker smoking his cigar, and it fell from his mouth. His sons ran to him - he was dead.
