N.J. Griffin Passes After Long Illness.
Funeral services for N.J. GRIFFIN were held at his late home Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. J.W. TWEED, his pastor, had charge of the service. Misses Vera and Veda HAKES and Iva WHITE sang, "Rock of Ages," "Lead Kindly Light," and "Nearer My God to Thee," and Miss Pearl WHITE accompanied the singing. The pallbearers were E.W. SUTHERLAND, Bert SOUDERS, Joseph HASKINS, William MEGGISON, C.M. TINDELL, Richard KEY. The burial was in the Burlingame cemetery.
Newton Jammison GRIFFIN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benoni GRIFFIN was born at Clarksburg, West Virginia, March 21, 1850. Here he grew to manhood, and was educated. During his young manhood he taught school for a time.He was first married to Jane HASKINS* and to this union was born one son, who survives him. On May 16, 1904 he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha CRISMAN. Two children, a son and a daughter, were born to this union.
Mr. GRIFFIN was a member of the Burlingame Methodist church. He was interested in the Scripture and became very familiar with it. he used to sing in the church choir and for many years he taught a Sunday School class. He has been a great sufferer for years and Mrs. GRIFFIN, and his daughter, Rose, have been his constant companions and nurses.
Mr. GRIFFIN is the last of a family of thirteen children. He passed away May 30th, 1931, at the ripe old age of 81 years, 2 months, and 9 days. He is survived by his widow; two sons, J.C. Griffin of Kansas City, Missouri, and one daughter, Rose Griffin of the home address; six grandchildren, and many friends. *Newton's first wife, Mary Jane "Jane" Haskins b. 15 Sep. 1858 Harrison Co, W.V., d. bef. 1885 Harrison Co, W.V. the d/o William Blunkell Haskins and Elizabeth R. (Brosius) Haskins.
