Diplomat, Businessman. The brother-in-law of New York Herald Publisher James Gordon Bennett Jr., Isaac Bell Jr. was a succesful cotton broker and later diversified into other businesses, including the French bank Lentilhon Company. Bell was also a primary investor in the Commercial Cable Company, the corporation that broke the monopoly on the Transatlantic cable. Living in New York City and Rhode Island, in 1883 Bell built the Isaac Bell House, one of Newport's first "summer cottages." An active Democrat, he served as US Minister to Netherlands from 1885 to 1888, and was a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1888. The Isaac Bell House was purchased by the Preservation Society of Newport County in 1994. It is one of the best remaining examples of Victorian-era Shingle Style architecture. The Isaac Bell House has undergone extensive restoration and is a now National Historic Landmark and tourist attraction.
