Retired Col. Lemuel Cornick Shepherd III, 76, a Marine Corps officer in three wars who started a Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps unit in a San Diego County high school, died Tuesday, July 17 2001 in La Jolla, CA.

Born in Long Beach, he was the son of former Marine Corps Commandant Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr.. "Bo" (as he was known) enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943 right out of high school and went on to Yale University under the Navy and Marine Corps' V-12 program. This program was brought about to generate a large number of officers for both the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps to meet the demands of World War II

He served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, and retired in 1973 as chief of staff of the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

After his retirement, Shepherd started the Naval Junior ROTC unit at Orange Glen High School in Escondido, CA and ran the program for 12 years.

After he retired from teaching, he devoted himself to La Jolla's St. James by-the-Sea Church and to board duties for the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas.

Shepherd was a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va., and the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.
