As a young Air Force lieutenant, Mattocks was temporarily on assignment to a B-52 crew flying out of Johnson AFB in North Carolina. On January 23, 1961 the plane in which he was flying broke apart in mid-air near Faro, NC, and Lt. Mattocks, who was not in an ejection seat, jumped out of the aircraft and survived - the only person ever to do so from a B-52.
The plane had two nuclear bombs on board, and one is still there, far beneath the surface of a cotton field.
