A long time resident of Pooler, Georgia, he retired from the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education after a 30 year tenure of teaching American and World Histories at Groves High School and Old Savannah High School.
He is survived by his wife, Dorathy F. Nisbet, two sisters, Judith N. Caldwell (Mrs. John Caldwell) and Jean N. Cates. He is survived also by his two nephews, Bradley Cates and Christopher Cates and several nieces and a nephew. He has one step-son, Eugene Wesley Elmore, and his three children.
James was an alumni of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (1963) with a degree in history and education.
As an avid deer and turkey hunter, as well as a fisherman, he enjoyed the outdoors and water sports. His other interests included world and domestic travel, Alabama football and basketball (Roll Tide), and observing animals in the wild. He was an avid reader.
He was an active member of Chapel-In-The-Gardens Presbyterian Church in Garden City, Georgia, he served several times on the Board of Deacons, and taught Sunday School as well as supporting the different programs and projects undertaken by the church.
