He was born Feb. 14, 1940 in East Alton, Illinois to the late Edward Washington & Beatrice Kathryn (Phillips) Abernathy.
On Nov. 16, 1984, he and Gladys Hanfelder were married in Wood River, Illinois. She survives in Rosewood Heights.
Mr. Abernathy had been an Adjuster at Olin Corp for 40 years. He had served in the Army Reserves from 1960 to 1966.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son: Darin (Beth) Abernathy of Bethalto, Illinois; a daughter: Jill (Ben) Allen of Fosterburg; two step-children: Sherri (Jeff) Reppenhagen of Bethalto and Kim (Joe) Binder of Godfrey, Illinois; 4 grandchildren: Drew and Alyssa Abernathy, Kayla (Aaron) Rhodes and Derrick Allen; a great-granddaughter: Aubrielle; 3 step-grandchildren: Briana (Colin) McVey, Nathan (fiancé Nichole Plunkett) Reppenhagen and Meghan (Brannon) Stamper; four step-great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Kindell, Alaina and Kyleigh; two brothers: George Abernathy of Bethalto and William (Emily) Abernathy of Indiana; three nieces, Susan (Steve) Booher of Bethalto, Sharon (Tom) Stassi of Edwardsville and Sheila (Dave) Galbreath of Godfrey and a nephew, Charles Abernathy.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
