Henry is the eighth of nine children born to his parents. He is the second attempt at a namesake for his father, Henry Mower Rice. Henry's same-named older brother (1856-1864) lives to age 7. This son lives only to age two.

In a book written in 1998 about his ancestors, Henry Hollingsworth Morgan speaks about the Rice family and states: "They lost four of their children to diphtheria, a scourge of the time." They had previously lost Henry Mower Rice Jr. (1856-1864), Robert Toombs Rice (1860-1863) and Mary Welch Rice (1862-1864).
