Ellen Rice is the eldest of the 11 children born to her parents, Edmund and Anna Maria Acker Rice. Ellen is born not long after Minnesota attains statehood. In about 1875, she marries Henry A. Boardman. Ellen and Henry have six children together. the two youngest, both sons, die early . When Ellen Rice Boardman dies in 1890, at age 40, she leaves her husband, age 47, and 4 kids Henry 14, Jessie 13, Mary 12 and Francis 10, all who live at 389 Grove St. in St. Paul, Minnesota. Their daughter Mary, dies only a year later, in 1891, at age 13.
