Christopher Brian Matthews, 28, of the Eastover community, passed away Friday, Sept. 30, 2005.

Mr. Matthews was a 1996 graduate of Cape Fear High School. He was a road deputy with Platoon A for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office for more than three years.

He is survived by his mother, Thelma S. Matthews, and his father, Ron Matthews, both of Fayetteville; a brother, Jarrod T. Matthews of Fayetteville; his maternal grandmother, Gloria McDaniel of Pinebluff; his fiancee, Jennifer Merritt of Clinton; two uncles, Howard Matthews Jr. of Fayetteville and Robert McDaniel of Pinebluff; and two aunts, Teresa Rockwell of Sanford and Mary Halstead of Pinebluff.

Funeral services for Christopher Brian Matthews will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Lebanon Baptist Church with the Rev. L. Greg Williams officiating. He will be laid to rest in Matthews Family Farm Cemetery in Bladen County.

The family will receive friends at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home from 7 to 9 tonight. {fayetteville observer}
Deputy Matthews was killed in an automobile accident while responding to assist another officer at the scene of a fight call on River Road.
During the response, Deputy Matthews' patrol car left the right side of the roadway. As he attempted to regain control of the patrol car, the vehicle overturned into a ditch.
Deputy Matthews had served as a patrol deputy with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office for 8 months, and had served as a corrections officer for the previous 2 years. He is survived by his fiancee, parents, and brother.

Christopher Matthews, 26, was killed when he lost control of his patrol car and wrecked at about noon Friday, Matthews was called to assist an officer on River Road, just outside Fayetteville. On his way, Matthews lost control of his patrol car. Investigators said he ran off the right shoulder, over corrected, and flipped his car into a ditch. Matthews died at the scene.

Before Matthews became a deputy he worked as detention officer. Butler said Matthews put himself through school and became a deputy eight months ago.
