A. Mayling Valder, 71, passed away Friday, April 24, 2009, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN. Mayling was born January 26, 1938, in Hong Kong, to Elliot and Ruth (Arestad) Aandahl, missionaries to China. She was raised in the United States, having lived in Minnesota and Washington. Mayling graduated from high school in Florida and was attending nursing school in Eau Claire, WI, when she met her soon-to-be husband, Fred Valder. They were married in 1957 and had four children while living in Superior, WI. In 1966, they moved to Minot, ND, where Mayling was able to complete her college education, majoring in English. Mayling taught English and Social Studies in Minot and then Dickinson, ND, over the next thirteen years. After Fred joined the commissary service of the U.S. government, Mayling and Fred lived and worked in California, New York, Italy, and Germany. They retired to Fergus Falls, MN, in December of 1994, moved to Grand Forks, ND, in 2002, and to Moorhead in 2005. Mayling was a devoted wife and beloved mother, grandmother, sister, teacher and friend. She enjoyed laughter, needlework, books, camping, cooking and entertaining.

Mayling will be remembered and missed by her husband, Fred; son, Martin Valder; daughters, Karen Barth, and Ann Valder; daughter-in-law, Char Welu; eight grandchildren; sisters, LaVonne Marubbio and Meris Farwell; and brother, Loren Aandahl. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, John Valder.
