Former Rockport Mayor Glenda Burdick, 82, passed away June 2, 2017 at her home in Rockport, Texas. She was born December 11, 1934 in Winnsboro, Texas to Mary Lou and Thomas Ellis Brown.

She held secretarial jobs in Dallas from 1952 to 1957 and from 1957 to 1961 she was administrative assistant to the director of parks and recreation in Wichita Falls, Texas. She held middle management positions at John Deere and Batteries Unlimited in Dallas from 1961 to 1978.

Glenda moved to Rockport in 1978 and for the next 12 years owned and operated a small real estate management, rental, and sales company on Key Allegro Island.

She began her public service in 1990 when she was appointed to the Rockport Planning and Zoning Commission. She served three years, two as chairman. In 1993 she was elected to the Rockport City council. She was elected mayor of Rockport in 1996 and held that post until term limits forced her to retire in 2002.

During her tenure with the City she was active at the state level as well, serving as 2nd vice president, 1st vice president, and president of the Texas Municipal League (TML), Region 11. Glenda was elected TML's state representative for Region 11, serving a four-year term, which ended in 2001. She served on TML's telecommunications committee, and was chairman of the TML committee regulating residential development, as well as the manufactured housing committee.

Attorney General Dan Morales appointed Glenda to the AG's Municipal Commission (open records and open meetings).

Gov. George W. Bush appointed her to the Advisory Commission on State Emergency Communications (911 Commission), and the Regional Review Committee for Community Development Grants for the Coastal Bend Region.

Glenda loved the City of Rockport. She felt her greatest accomplishment during her years of public service was the 12-acre park near Rockport-Fulton Middle School and Rockport-Fulton High School. The park has an eight-lane Olympic size swimming pool, as well as a recreational pool. On April 25, 2007 a gazebo was dedicated in her name at that park.

She was the co-founder of Christmas Celebration of Lights in Rockport.

Glenda was a Methodist. At different periods of her life in Rockport she was active in the Friends of the Library, 100 Club of Aransas County, South Rockport Neighbors, Republican Women's Club, Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce, Rockport Center for the Arts, Harbor Oaks Women's Club, Aransas County Clean Team, Texas Maritime Museum, and the Aransas County United Way.

In 1998 the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce named Glenda Citizen of the Year.

She was preceded in death by her husband R.L. "Dick" Burdick, her parents, and brother Earl Brown.

She is survived by her daughter, Kim Skipper, Rockport; step-daughter's Leslie (Buddy) Young, Dallas; Sharon (Steve) Olson, Naperville, IL; Jan (Steve) Proctor, Boise, ID; sisters Lillian Beard and Mary Tom McLemore, both of Winnsboro; six step-grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; four nieces; three nephews; and many friends who will miss her dearly.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given by donation to AIM Hospice, P.O. Box 2300, Rockport, TX 78381, or the Texas Maritime Museum, 1201 Navigation Circle, Rockport, TX, 78382.
