Ethelda was born on March 5, 1923 and passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2016.

Ethelda was a resident of Six Lakes, Michigan at the time of her passing. She graduated from Carey High School and then St. Mary's School of Nursing in Galveston TX. She. She was married to Darwin.

LANSING, MI -- For Ethelda Van Houten, 91, the decision to enlist in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps was easy.

"I was a nurse, and they needed nurses," she said during MLive's Michigan Honors event at the State Capitol Building.

Van Houten only served one year, from April of 1945 to April of 1946, and never left America during her service, but she took care of countless soldiers at Fort Sam Houston near San Antonio, Texas, at McCloskey General in Temple, Texas, and Brooke General Hospital in San Antonio.

One of Van Houten's patients at McCloskey General turned out to be a very special man. Darwin Van Houten was an amputee after losing a limb in the war -- McCloskey was known for its care of amputees and served more than 5,000 at any given time during World War II.

Van Houten attracted Ethelda's attention and was "such a nice soldier," she said. The two fell for each other, and their courtship quickly became serious.

"We met in September when I was caring for him, and we were married in March," she said.

Originally from the small town of Childress, Texas, Ethelda followed her husband back to the small town of Six Lakes, Michigan, where she has lived for 70 years.

"After all this time, I feel like a Michigander," she said.

As a nurse, Van Houten entered the Army as a second lieutenant, a higher rank than her husband attained. It also made her one of the higher-ranking attendees at the Michigan Honors event in Lansing Thursday afternoon.
