A letter from Marion (Lewis) Huerlin, his granddaughter Feb. 12, 1947 to her daughters tells about the family history:
This is written to you on my mother's birthday-- also Abraham Lincoln's birthday.
My mother, Florence Marion Shuler, (your grandmother) was born in Minneapolis, Minn., Feb. 12, 1870. Her mother was Lucretia Foster Shuler, and her father was Robert Shuler.
My mother married Harvey Theodore Lewis, July 26, 1887. I was born Dec. 11, 1888, in Minneapolis. My mother was 17 and my father, 19, at the time they were married. (He was your grandfather.)
My father was only 23 when he passed on in Spokane, Wash., from Typhoid Fever, which was quite prevalent at that time. It was susposed to be due to the drinking water.
Your grandmother Lewis passed on at the age of 43, due to "a clot of blood on the brain" said the examining surgeon. This was said to have been brought about either by a fall or by a blow on the back of the head.
Your great-grandmother, Lucretia Foster Shuler, was born in Fairfield, Maine, Sept. 11, 1836. She lived to be 102 years and two months of age. She had three children, Harry Eugene Shuler, Alfred Foster Shuler, and Florence Marion. Her husband, Robert Shuler used to spell his name "Schuler" and came from a Pennsylvania Dutch family. I do not know much about his earlier history.
I am giving you these facts so you will know a little about your family history. Dad will have to tell you about his side of the family. Mother
