'Don was the youngest of eight children born to George W. and Barbara E. (Enos) Vails. He attended and graduated Pasco public schools in 1943.

"A child of the Great Depression, he was also one of the Greatest Generation who proudly served during WW-II in the Pacific as a radio operator in the United States Army, 77th Division, Battery A, 902nd Field Artillery Battalion.

"He was a member of the advance unit to invade the Kerama Retto Ryukyus ahead of the invasion of Okinawa. Despite a shingles outbreak on his back, he did his duty by carrying the heavy radio without complaint.

"Don returned to Pasco in 1946, fell in love with a beautiful Pasco woman, Ethel Olson, and they married in 1947. They raised four children there: Beverly, Vernon "Pete," Donna, and Melanie."
