Son of Amos Sutton and Sarah Merrick (Ely) Hayden.
His father, Amos Hayden was a prominent minister in the Christian church and president of the Western Reserve Electric Institute, which later became Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio.
His mother, Sarah Merrick Ely was born in Massachusetts, her father was a soldier in the war of 1812.

Charles L. Hayden was in the civil war. Company B, 1st Regiment, Ohio Volunteers Light artillery.
After the war, he returned to East Cleveland, Ohio. In 1867, he move to Minock, Woodford County, IL.
Married Lenah M. Rowe, the daughter of Charles O. and Mary Rowe.
Obit gave date of marriage as December 22, 1869 in Woodford County. Been unable to verify the marriage record.

Around 1890, they relocated to Morgan County, IL.
Mr. Hayden served three terms as circuit clerk of Morgan County.

The couple had four children:
Ethel D. Hayden, b. Nov. 29, 1870
Edith May Hayden, b. May 23, 1872, and died in infancy.
Edna Hayden, b. Oct. 25, 1874, and died in infancy.
Frank Leslie Hayden, b. May 3, 1894, died in infancy.

On June 10, 1897, Charles and Leanah Hayden adopted Lois R. King, b. March 22, 1894. Lois's birth parents were Allen and Catherine Green King.
