Harriet Evelyn Smith, 79 year-old Yreka resident passed away in Fairchild Medical Center on May 17, 2001. Harriet was a Scott Valley native, born on the Flek ranch on January 28, 1922 to Harry and Irene Attebery. When Harriet was six months old, the family moved to Happy Camp where she grew up. Harriet was married to Jamie Smith on March 29, 1941 in Washington.
She loved the outdoors, flowers, gardening, camping and cooking. Harriet was an avid reader and knitted afghans for many family members. In addition to Harriet's husband, Jamie Smith of Yreka, survivors include daughter and son-in-law Susan and Darrel Fincher of Homer, Alaska; a sister, Frances Attebery Head of Happy Camp; granddaughter and her husband, Amy and Lyle Sauget; great-grandson, Aron Jamie Sauget; nephew, Thomas Head; a great niece, Elkie Head; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Inurnment will be in the Happy Camp Cemetery in Happy Camp. Contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Superior California, 2732 Cohasset Road, Chico, CA 95962 or to the charity of one's choice. Girdner Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
