Benjamin Crowell was born in Manchester by the Sea, Ma. His father was Capt. Samuel Crowell who was a whaling captain. He had 2 sisters, Emily and Susan. Susan had the chapel built in honor of Benjamin after his death in Colorado Springs. Benjamin was one of the first 3 El Paso County commissioners to sign Colorado Springs into being. He ran large herds of sheep on Cheyenne Mt. and was a partial owner of the Robert E Lee mine in Leadville, Colo. He and his sisters never married and consequently had no known children. He came to Colorado Springs as a book binder. He arrived in Colorado in 1859. He was a leader and highly respected member of this new community.
