Helen "Missy" Adams, Shell Lake,, died April 16, 2007, at Onalaska Care Center. She was 89 years old.
She was born June 12,1917,in Shell Lake,to Michael and Barbara(Schreiber) Adams.
Helen taught kindergarten for 53 years in the Cumberland School District. Fondly known as "Missy" by her students, parents and staff, her name came to symbolize the best in elementary education as she helped youngsters begin their educational careers in the most positive, loving and effective way.
A graduate of Shell Lake High School, she continued on to receive her bachelor of science degree from UW-Superior in 1952, her master of arts degree in early childhood education in 1958 from Columbia Unversity in New York and her advanced degree as specialist in early childhood education in 1961,also from Columbia.
She was selected as Wisconsin Teacher of the Year in 1960 and National Teacher of the Year in 1961. President John F. Kennedy presented her award to her in the Rose Garden. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the National Association of Teachers of the Year. Helen has supported teacer eduation through the Missy Scholarship Program, within the Cumberland School District.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Cathryn Hopke,Agnes Wennerberg and Marie Ullom; niece, Jane Wennerberg;nephew,Eugene Hopke.
She is survived by a sister Irene Pieper,Shell Lake/Minnetonka,MN;and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 21, at St.Joseph Catholic Church with Andrew Ricci officiating. Burial will be St. Joseph Cemetery, Shell Lake. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Pockat Funeral Home, and one hour prior to service on Saturday at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Joseph Catholic Church and to Missy Schlorship fund.
The Pockat Funeral Home, Shell Lake, was entrusted with arrangements.
