Pang Yia Yang

Manitowoc - Pang Yia Yang, age 86, a Manitowoc resident died on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at H.S.H.S. Saint Vincent Hospital in Green Bay.

Pang Yia was born on June 6, 1931 in Xoom Muas, Laos, the son of the late Num Ntaaj and Mim (Thao) Yang. He had 7 brothers: Pob Tsua Yang, Xaliv Tsu Yang, Zaam Thoj Yang, Neeb Yang, Laj Txab Yang, Txaj Tswb Yang, Nixawg Yang and 2 sisters: Pluas Yang and Phuab (Mog) Yang. They lived in the village of Haav Tsawb for 21 years.

Pang Yia enlisted in the Royal Laotian Army to become a soldier, leaving home on October 2, 1959. He was engaged in the Vietnam War as part of the 21st Regiment and 214th Company. After basic training, Pang Yia was stationed at Moos Nyaj, Laos. He served in the Army until the end of the war in 1975. Later in the United States, Pang Yia was awarded a medal on October 20, 2016 for his military service.

In 1960, Pang Yia Yang married Laug Thao, the daughter of Num Ntaaj Thao and Vaab Moua. They had 2 sons: Txawj Xyum (Sou) Yang and Num Yeej (Ying) Yang and 2 daughters: Ntsum Yang and Maim Yang. Laug Thao died in 1969.

In 1972, Pang Yia remarried to Mao Moua, the daughter of Nkaaj Tsheej Moua and Maab Tsaab in Laos. They had 5 sons: Xang Yang; Moua X. Yang; Tou Long Yang; Xao Fue Yang; Hong Chang Yang and 2 daughters: Sheng Yang and Jennifer Yang.

When Pang Yia returned at the end of the war to his home village in Laos, he took his wife Mao and family to hide in the mountains for 3 years. He then fled to Thailand on March 6, 1979, living in a refugee settlement camp at Ban Vinai. The family emigrated to the United States on May 10, 1980, coming to live in Manitowoc, at that time.

Pang Yia is survived by his wife: Mao Yang, Manitowoc; sons: Sou Yang (Pang Vang), St. Paul, MN; Ying Yang (Wa Chang), St. Paul, MN; Xang Yang; Moua X. Yang; Tou Long Yang; Hong Chang Yang; all of Manitowoc; daughters: Sheng Yang; Jennifer Yang; both of Manitowoc; 1 brother: Chia Chue Yang, St. Paul, MN; 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. Pang Yia was preceded in death by his parents; 6 brothers; 2 sisters; his first wife; 1 son: Choj Fwm Yang (2001); 2 daughters: Ntsum Yang; Maim Yang.

Pang Yia professed his faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized on Pentecost, Sunday, May 26, 1985 at the First Baptist Church in Manitowoc. He was a member at his death of the Hmong Lutheran Church (Redeemer) in Manitowoc.

A time of visitation has already taken place at the Hmong Culture Service Center in Sheboygan on February 17 & 18. A funeral service was held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Manitowoc on February 19, with Pastor Moses Thao officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc. Pang Yia was always busy during the growing season with a large vegetable garden and often assisted his wife in sales at the Farmer's Markets held in Manitowoc and Sheboygan.
