Edna Lee Halden was the daughter of John and Kate Luke, and the only grandchild of Jeremiah Lee and Emily Lee, a pioneer African-American couple in the mining town of Central City, Colorado.

Edna was born in 1884 in Central City and attended the public school there. From an early age she showed promise as a musician.

In 1903, Kate studied for a year at Oberlin Academy in Ohio, and then for another year at Oberlin College. From 1903 to 1909 she attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

Sometime between 1910 and 1916, Edna, along with her mother, her aunt Kate Luke and uncles John and Andy Lee, moved to Cleveland. For several years Edna worked as a music teacher, but eventually she found a full-time position as a bookkeeper at the House of Wills, a funeral home that served the black community. She worked there for 30 years.

Edna never married. She retired in 1953 and moved back to Central City for a few months before returning to Cleveland. She died there in 1954. Her ashes are buried in the Lee family plot at Riverside Cemetery in Denver.
