John Ray Abee, age 83, of Water Plant Rd., Maiden passed away Sunday, August 27, 2006 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.
Born May 26, 1923 in Burke County, he was the son of the late Frank Abee and the late Bessie Townsend Abee. He was a United States Army veteran having served under General Patton in Europe during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 48 in Maiden and was employed with Maiden Knitting Mills for 25 years.

In addition to his parents, two brothers, Horace Abee, James Abee, and one sister, Azalee Moore preceded him in death.

He is survived by:

His Wife: Martha Deane Abee of the home.

2 Daughters and Sons-In-Law: Marsha and Wayne Long of Claremont; Pamela and Robert Cooper of Liberty, NC.

2 Sisters: Mary-Alice Heavner of Lincolnton; Betty Brooks of Kings Mountain.

3 Grandsons: Brian Long of Columbia, SC; Collin Cooper of Angers, France; John Charles Cooper of Liberty, NC.

2 Granddaughters: Lori Long of Claremont; Kendra and husband, Mark Chilton of Burlington, NC.

1 Great Grandchild: James Nolan Chilton of Burlington, NC.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Mays Chapel United Methodist Church in Maiden with the Rev. Ralph Lepley officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Mays Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with graveside rites by American Legion Post 16 of Newton.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Burke Mortuary in Maiden.
