Joann M. Vedder
ONEIDA Joann M. Vedder, 68, West Elm Street, passed early Saturday morning, June 2, 2018, in her residence. Born in Oneida, N.Y. on Oct. 31, 1949, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Clarey. A lifelong resident of the area, Joann was a graduate of Oneida High School, class of 1968. She married Harmon Vedder in Oneida on May 23, 2004.I was given the gift of life, and now I have to give it back. This is hard. But I was a lucky woman, who led a lucky existence, and for this I am grateful. I feel I have had an amazing life without leaving wonderful Oneida, N.Y. I believe we are each of us connected to every person and everything on this Earth, that we are in fact one divine organism having an infinite spiritual existence. Of course, we may not always comprehend that. I was always passionate about others, and have always strived to be a strong advocate of assisting those in need. I was employed at Oneida Healthcare Center for over 39 years as the Director of Patient Registration and Telecommunications and oversaw two Health Centers for Clerical services. I was given a great number of opportunities during this time and met many great people throughout my journey. However, in January 2006 I was diagnosed with Melanoma. While testing, a different cancer was found on throughout other regions of my body. Instead of giving up, I decided to continue my selfless service of helping others in the healthcare sector and continue to work part-time. On Nov. 29, 2006, I again was hit by unexpected news, as my husband, Harmon A. Vedder, died of a massive heart attack in my arms. I decided to be joyful about having had a full life, rather than sad about having to die. Amazingly, this outlook worked for me. (Well, you know, most of the time.) Meditation and the reflection on my life also helped me accept what I could not change. Living life to its fullest, I decided to go galavanting down to the city, and jet set with my brother and nephew across Europe. Upon returning I was able to witness both weddings of my niece and nephew and the births of their children. It's truly amazing the people that come and go from our lives but most of all those that stay no matter how much time passes between any contact with each other. I'm speaking of so many of you that have blessed my life. It will great to see all of you at the final reunion. At any rate, I am at peace. And on that upbeat note, I take my mortal leave of this, revolving world, that one last stroll through the City of Oneida and the memory of a child's hand in mine.My beloved Joseph, Jim, Deborah, Lynne, John, Jaxon, Vivian, Jamie, Monique Ethan, Hunter and Renee. My beloved friends and family. How precious you all have been to me. Knowing and loving each one of you was the success story of my life. Metaphorically speaking, we will meet again, joyfully, on the other side. Beautiful day, happy to have been here.Joann was predeceased by her husband, Harmon Vedder and her parents, Mary F. Clarey and Jospeh A. Clarey Sr. Joann is survived by her brothers, James E. (Deborah) Clarey Sr., and Joseph A. Clarey Jr.; granddaughter, Renee Vedder; nieces and nephews, Lynne S. Winters (Clarey), John S. Winters, Jaxon and Vivian Winters, James and Monique Clarey, Ethan and Hunter Clarey. The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Martyn and Dr. Gentile, beauty salon friend, Evelyn, Renee Stone, Helen Hilliker and best friend, Jackie Keller.Funeral services will be held on Thursday 10 a.m. at Coolican-McSweeney Funeral Home.
