US Congressman. He was elected to represent Pennsylvania's 24th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1861 to 1863. He was again elected to Congress in 1887, and represented the 20th Congressional District from 1887 to 1889. He was the uncle of Congressman William Irvin Swope, and the father of Michigan Senator John Patton Jr. and Congressman Charles Emory Patton.
