Opera singer. Within three years of his 1957 operatic debut at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan, he made his American debut singing the High Priest in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of Verdi's Nabucco. He remained with the company until 1989, singing in 414 performances of 28 different operas. He made guest appearances all over the world including Lyric Opera of Chicago, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Palais Garnier in Paris, the Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera House in London, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Berlin State Opera, and San Francisco Opera. His debut at Teatro alla Scala didn't come until 1986 but he appeared regularly all over Italy including the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro San Carlo in Naples and the Arena di Verona Festival, where he appeared for 30 seasons, as well as the opera houses in Palermo, Rome, Genoa, Trieste and Turin. Among his many recordings are Puccini's "Turandot" under Francesco Molinari-Pradelli (1965), Verdi's "Aida" (1967) and "Il trovatore" (1969) under Zubin Mehta, Verdi's "Luisa Miller" under Peter Maag (1975), Verdi's "La forza del destino" under James Levine (1976), Ponchielli's "La Gioconda" under Jesus Lopez-Cobos (1979), and Mascagni's "Iris" under Giuseppe Patané (1988). Following his retirement, he remained active as a voice teacher.
