While at Simpson, Pat and Katherine Ann (Katy) Buxton of Lenox, Iowa met and became college sweethearts. They married on May 27, 1951, and have two sons: Michael Buxton (Mike) Devine, LL.M., of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and The Rev. Timothy Patrick (Tim) Devine, of Seattle, Washington.

Pat discovered after taking an aptitude test that a career in teaching was his best match. He was a much-loved teacher in the West Des Moines Schools, spending his whole career at Stilwell Jr. High School from the day the building opened until his retirement. During his teaching career, Pat earned his Master of Science in Education degree from Drake University. Upon his retirement, the Cleatie Devine Social Studies Award has been presented annually by Stilwell Jr. High School to the most deserving social studies students. Pat was a member of the Iowa State and National Education Associations.

Pat was known for his dramatic interpretation in full make-up and costume of the Robert W. Service poem, “The Cremation of Sam McGee,” carrying on the tradition of his father, Cleatie, Sr., and performed at the Des Moines Y.M.C.A. Camp, Stilwell Jr. High School, and, in retirement, at Norwalk Jr. High School.
In retirement, Pat was a member and song leader of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, and through his membership was a volunteer at Findley School in Des Moines for the Speak Up Program and the Chess Club.

Pat was a 77-year member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines where he was a Sunday school teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, and was an ordained Elder who served on the church’s Session. He was also a member of: Acanthus Masonic Lodge, where he served as De Molay Dad of Alverson Chapter; Baldwin Patterson V.F.W. Post; and the Polk County Pioneer Club.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents Cleatie H., Sr., and Ivy Jane; his sister and brother-in-law Geneva and W. Gene Carman; and his nephew Jeff Carman. He was also preceded in death by Katy’s parents, Rolland and Ruth Buxton; his brother-in-law Garland Buxton; and his beloved granddaughter Lauren Devine. Those cherishing his memory are Katy, Mike, and Tim; David Anderson; niece and husband Jodi and Dennis Kortsha; and great nephew Cameron Snyder.
