In 1940 she and her parents and nine siblings lived in a house they were renting for $11 a month at 1546 South Lee Street in Indianapolis, IN. Her father worked as a laborer, but had not worked in 1939.

Hester J. Barber 69, Indianapolis, IN, died April 22, 2007. She was the widow of Cecil M. Barber. She enjoyed life especially going to the Riverboat and watching the Game Show Network. Her children, Debbie Gregory, Becky Swinney, Benton, David, Aaron Barber, Kelly Wells; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Bob, Eugene, Ralph, Daniel, Albert, Lester Wessel, sisters, Blanche Smith, Barbara Hancock, Pauline Herman, Margie Burke survive Hester. Her son, Donald Lee Barber; a great grandchild; brothers, Lester, Frederick, Alfred "Tiny", Johnny, Norman Wessel; sister, Pauline Herman preceded Hester in death.

Services were entrusted to Flanner Buchanan Funeral Center of Decatur, Indiana.
