The son of Peter Surdam and Ruby Gould, he married first Sophronia Briggs on January 1, 1850. Following her death a year later, he married another Sophronia, Sophronia Augusta Spaulding, on January 1, 1854. Together they had three children: Mary Aurel, Martha Maria, and William Anthony Thomas. Anthony died in a hospital in Memphis of chronic diarrhea. His final resting place is unknown. He is not on the register of soldiers buried in National Cemeteries, nor is he buried at home in Ohio. It is presumed he was laid in a mass grave in Tennessee.
