MSG US Army

He joined the US Army in 1962, serving in the 7th, 1st, and 5th Special Forces Group. His other assignments included IV CORP Mike Force, MAC V SOG, and Command and Control North, with Recon Team North Carolina. He was an instructor at the Special Forces Combat Diver School in Key West and a member of the Jumping Ambassadors in Panama. He graduated the Military Freefall Course, Combat Diver Qualification Course, Special Forces training, Pathfinder, Air Assault, Jumpmaster, and attended five different language schools. Among his military awards and decorations are the National Defense Service Medal; Parachutist Badge; Master Parachutist Badge; Military Freefall Parachutist Badge; Bronze Star Medal 3rd Oak Leaf Cluster and 1 with V device; Combat Infantry Badge; Army Commendation Medal; Air Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with 11 Campaign Stars; Presidential Unit Commendation Medal; Meritorious Unit Commendation; Vietnam Civil Action Honor Medal 1st Class; Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device; Philippines Jump Wings; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star; Good Conduct Medal 6th Award NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3); Overseas Service Ribbon (2); and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He retired after 22 years in the military and became a Police Officer in Fayetteville, NC. He later went to work for the US State Department.

He was predeceased by his parents, Betsy Reed Miller Alexander and Andrew Stirling Alexander Jr. He was survived by his wife; a son; a daughter; a son-in-law; six grandchildren; two sisters; two brothers; and two sisters-in-law.

Interment on June 29, 2018.
