Percy was born in Yorkshire, England, the son of Charles Compton and Susannah Winter. When WWI broke out, Percy joined the Army in England. During that time, he lost 2 brothers - Charles Duncan Compton and Harold Compton.
After the WWI, he arrived in Canada in 1919 to join his then wife, Elizabeth Emma Atkinson along with their son, Walter and daughter, Marjorie. It was shortly after arriving that they divorced.
He then married to Constance Hood, and when his parents and sister moved across to BC, they came as well. Percy taught prisoners how to make shoes Oakalla Prison, Burnaby, BC.
