Louis was the son of Eugene Defaut (b. France0 and Henrietta Rhinehard Defaut (b. Germany). He had the following siblings Paulina, Albert , John August (b. Apr. 21, 1881 Little Rock, Ark.), and Eugene Maurice. On April 20, 1914 he married Charlotte " Lottie" Clarissa Hinkson a widow of Reginald F. Hinkson. This was his first marriage. He listed himself as a traveling road man. They both listed themselves as being from Boston, MA, but married in Columbia, NY.
The couple was not found again until 1924 when they were living in Los Angeles, Calif. Lottie's 7 year old granddaughter Wini Hinkson was now living with the couple. Louis was now working as an auditor for an oil company.
His burial is most likely outside of San Francisco.
