Earl Twito, 95, of Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Earl Oscar Twito was born December 18, 1922 in Isabel, South Dakota. The youngest child of Lillie Belle (Meginness) and Walter T. Twito, Earl spent his early years in Isabel. His life was enriched by being surrounded with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of wonderful friends.
Besides South Dakota, Earl and his family lived in Oregon, Idaho, and settled finally in California. When his older brother John joined the Navy in 1942, Earl went to work at the Pacific Lumber Company in Scotia, CA. He and his family moved to Rio Dell, CA. Later, Earl and John purchased a home in Fortuna, CA.
After John was discharged from the Navy, he joined Earl at the Pacific Lumber Company until they both retired. John and Earl traveled extensively throughout the United States and into Mexico, visiting historical sites, relatives and annual reunions with John’s Navy buddies. The PATSU Unit 1-7 adopted Earl as an honorary member and he enjoyed meeting many of John’s friends.
Earl returned to South Dakota in 2012, at age 90, in poor health. He moved in to Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls to be near family. He seemed to thrive in his new home and loved the staff in the Allen Wing, joking often and enjoying his new friends. Earl will best be remembered by family and friends as a kind, generous man. He had a wonderful sense of humor and seldom had any complaints.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Richard and his brother and best friend, John. He is survived by numerous cousins including Ruth Schmidt and Delores Kruger, and close friends Jack and Martha Wilkerson, Benjamin Addura, Richard and Mia Rivera and Connie Simpson.
Memorial services for Earl will begin 2:00 pm Saturday at the Halladay – Peterson Chapel of Dow Rummel Village. Interment will be in the Hillview Cemetery, Isabel, SD.
